“15 on Schizo” 05/01/13

On Saturday (05/01/13) I had a second filming session with Sonia. We filmed the human figure through tinted glass. We also re-filmed a sequence that Sonia shot in green screen studio as it didn’t have the desired emotional impact. The filming was done in 2,5 hours.

Here’s a little technical sketch of a shot:

In order to get the desired image, I was in the dark side of the room, in front of the tinted glass screen. The subject was behind the screen, lit by backlight.
In order to get the full shot of the character, I tilted the camera by ninety degrees. This allowed me to avoid the edges of the glass screen and keep a higher resolution of the image when it is scaled down to fit the frame.

Finally got some practical work done. It was a last minute call, as the person who was supposed to cover for me didn’t show up, but luckily I happened to be around and I did what I had to do. Today we filmed several shots for the projection on the outside of the booth. We were filming in a photo studio with white walls and lots of available lighting, so it didn’t take long to set up the shots. As the shots were 3-4 minutes long, we got them all from the first take, so the day was really productive. Unfortunately, due to time constrains we didn’t manage to get all the shots we planned, but we are still going to return to the studio and get them all sorted out.

Just finished doing some administration work for the project – I had to prepare and send out the Actors’ contracts and also notify everybody about the change of Character names (I mentioned it in my first post) and filming dates. It took an hour altogether as we have 9 actors and everyone’s details had to be filled in manually.

A journey through a dream. Music video (17/12/12) 12:30

Today we had a meeting with the production crew of the music video “A journey through a dream” – director/producer Aurelija Diliute, 1 AD Anastasija Panfilova and I – the director of photography. We carried out some camera movement and editing tests. We also discussed the storyboard over lunch and came up with some interesting ideas that add some depth and more meaning to the story. Overall it was a really productive day.

Today I had one on one meeting with Sonia Paladini about her project – an audiovisual art installation about schizophrenia. We’ve had a few unoficial meetings along the way, but this time we had a much deeper discussion about the visuals I am working on for this project. We analysed the test footage that Sonia had already shot and edited, so that I know what kind of footage I should film. I also consulted Sonia on how to achieve certain visual effects for particular shots. Some filming sessions were arranged in January.

At 11 o’clock I had a meeting with Nauris Sadovskis, who is directing and producing a short film about Erotomania. I got enrolled on his project as a cinematographer. We talked about the visual style, references, soundtracks. We also looked at the photos of the location that Nauris already found for the shooting. Next step of the project is the screenplay, then we will have much more to talk about and work on. More information about Nauris’s project on his blog: naurissadovskis.wordpress.com.

What a day. We arrived to the location before 9, but the actress who was supposed to audition at 9 didn’t show up. The second actor cheered us up as he arrived an hour earlier and was really friendly and happy. After an hour the third actor came, he was all suited up for the role of a gangster and did really well on reading – as his character didn’t have many lines in the film, he also read the other character’s lines. Then after a break an actress came to audition for the role of a sixties girl. As she was the only one who applied for this role she got the part straight away. That was it. Out of 11 actors only 4 did show up. Others wouldn’t even pick up their phones when we wanted to make sure if they were comming. Some of them did write an e-mail, or cancelled the audition online. There were actors who were really interested but couldn’t make it today, so we will probably organise another audition for them.

Attached are the pictures of the actors, who did show up for the audition (and got the roles in the film).

A Journey through a dream. Music video (12/12/12)

Today I finally had an official meeting with Aurelija Diliute, the director of the music video “A journey through a dream”. We looked through the storyboard and floor plans, discussed the tricky shots and decided to meet next week to make some test shots. The location still has to be found, that is when I’ll be able to start drawing lighting plans and lens tests.

Today is 10th of December 2012 and I am writing to catch up on the work I’ve done for the part of my dissertation project, a short film “Roger Gray” (originally “Charlie Kray”, but Laura, the producer, was advised to change the names of the characters). As the original idea was to make a film about the Krays, a part of my research back in October was to read their biography to get engaged with the characters and their story. I also watched a film “The Krays” by Peter Medak for inspiration on visual style and went on location scouting to the places mentioned in the book. I’ve been put off my work by a serious sickness, but now I am back on track and there is lots of work to be done. Yesterday (09/12/12) I had a meeting with the producer – we discussed the locations to be considered for filming, changed the names of the characters and planned the casting session which will take place on Wednesday (12/12/12). Today my task is to call the actors who didn’t reply to e-mails, remind them about the casting and book the slots.

So I agreed to help out the producer with inviting actors to the audition on Wednesday. This is a report about how it went. Out of 12 people I had to contact I managed to reach 8. I booked 4 people for auditions, 2 people were interested, but were not able to come to the audition and another 2 people could not participate in our project. There are 4 people to call back again. I was pleasantly surprised with my telecommunication skills and quite enjoyed calling and talking to people I don’t know.
